Opinions please!

I think I might have 1 or 2 (hopefully more?) sewing enthusiasts that sometimes read this blog. So, I have a question for your gals. I'm going to start my hunt for an overlock machine and maybe if Santa is feeling generous this Christmas, I might have it by the end of the year. I love my regular machine, but would really like to be able to serge off seam allowances to yield a more professional and cleaner look. So, if you have an overlock machine, which one do you have? Do you like it? Pros and cons? Would you recommend it? And for any of you that own a coverstitch machines, your thoughts about those are welcome, too. I find that I really love sewing with knits and while I think I've finally figured out how to do hems with some Solvy and my twin stretch needle, it's not the best.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

  3. I have no idea what an overlock or coverstitch machine is - BUT my mom sews lining and fabric on all of her knit/felted bags and I can ask what needles/settings she uses if you want me too.

  4. Hi, I have a Brother 1034D serger and it is just delicious, IMO!

It was around $200 on Amazon but Fabric.com had a big coupon in June/July so it can be less than that too. Allbrands.com also carries it.

Easy to use, easy to thread, mine came with videos. I let fear keep me away from sewing knits for a year after I bought it and what a waist!

Have you checked PR? Both the reviews and the message board. Someone just asked this (again) and people are suggesting different brands.

I plan to get a separate coverstitch next year to make professional hems too!

    Good luck with the hunt.

  5. I really love my Babylock. It is so easy to thread and change from an overlock to coverstitch. I have had it for about 8 months now.

  6. Maybe I should take up sewing. To be honest, it scares the shit out of me. I'll stick with the whole cooking thing for a while and live vicariously through you.

I hope Santa coughs up the EXACT machine you want!

  7. I have a baby lock serger (cuts off and seams the edge for a RTW seam) and a Janome Coverpro 1000 for coverstitching. I love sewing knits now! I was doing the stretch stitch on my regular sewing maching and twin needle for hemming, but Santa brought me the Coverpro last year. (-:

  8. I have a Janome serger. Can't remember the model right off - but I use it for EVERYTHING. Including serging the edges of quilts before I bind them. The serger that I have does not convert to coverhemming. So? I currently have a Coverpro 1000 cpx on layaway at a Janome store in AL. I am very happy about it - read great reviews for it on several sewing sites. I won't get it until after Christmas - hope we're still in touch by then & I'll let you know how it goes! I am also going to order the binding attachment for it too. Pricey little booger.......
