Back to good

So, after 2 months of being sick sick sick, I finally returned to the land of the living this weekend. Hallelujah! I'd say I'm about 85%, which is good enough for me. I'm still coughing some, but it's much better than it's been in weeks. Also, my muscle strain? tear?, whatever it was on my left side has mostly resolved itself. I went back to the gym on Saturday and I cannot tell you how good it felt to move and break a sweat. It was also nice to have the owner and several regulars tell me how much I was missed - and really, the feeling was mutual. I've also cleaned the house, washed all the linens in the spare bedroom, aka the sick ward, so that my mom has a clean place to sleep when she comes to visit next month and I've started cooking again. Let's just say that my husband is very happy to have his wife back and goodness knows I'm thrilled to be feeling so normal!

On the flip side, I finally took a looksee at my calendar and oh boy - it's a busy next two and a half months. Eeek! UCLA and Lakers games, a concert, my mom coming to visit, dinner parties, book club meetings, all the holiday hoopla, etc, etc. All fun stuff, but pretty much my weekends, aka my primary sewing hours, between now and the end of the year are packed. I was all pumped to get my LBD all made and entered, but it looks like it's just not gonna happen this month. Blah. I figure I'll scope out the contests for 2010 and find one or two that look fun and plan ahead to make some good and enter it. My goal isn't necessarily to win (although wouldn't that be awesome!), but just to have fun and get a new garment at the end of it. As for that LBD, thank you everyone for chiming in with your thoughts! I still plan on making one sometime after the new year (still undecided on the actual pattern), it will just be for my own enjoyment and not for a contest.

Speaking of sewing stuff, I'm so ridiculously behind on blogging my sewing projects. Oops! I really need to catch up, hopefully this week or over the weekend. Finished stuff includes a baby blanket, several toddler skirts, a toddler dress, a work skirt for me and some lounge pants. Mostly successes with one misstep thrown in for good measure. Ha! Pictures and reviews coming soon.

In the meantime, I'm just enjoying getting back to my regularly scheduled life. I missed it so much and am so very happy to be back in my groove.

Calm

For the first time in weeks I finally feel like myself again. I really missed me and I'm glad she is back. :) I think it's a combination of things. Over the last few weeks I've seen a lot of friends, new and old, for dinners and social events. Even though I've felt really down and just wanted to curl up by myself, I think getting out and socializing really helped my mood. We also finally took care of a bill related to my father's death. I'm not comfortable going into it here, but it's been worrying me for weeks and even though it really sucked to have to pay it, it's now taken care of and I don't have to think about it any more. A huge weight has been lifted. Lastly, I had a total of 9 days off from work and am just now back. Between weekends, the holiday and taking a few personal days for our mini-vacation, it was nice to have such a large block of time away from the office that was time for me. Not time that I had to be dealing with holiday madness or death arrangements or anything else. It feels like all of this stuff together finally got me back on the right track.

Jim and I spent our mini-vacay in Vegas (Yes, we're there all the time. Yes, we love it. Yes, we'll likely be back before the year is up. hehehe!) last week and it was great, save for the terrifying drive over the I-15 while it was technically "closed". :: shudder :: It deserves it's own post with the few pictures I managed to take, but until then, the short version is yummy food, yummier drinks, great evening with Vino and Spurs, spa-ahs and dance, dance, dance!

It always sucks to be home after a vacation, but I'm feeling really good. I have a new gym schedule worked out that I'm actually excited about. I've been cooking a lot more and we're eating out less. My DVR and google reader are still backed up, but I'm getting there. :) Basically, I'm back in my routine and it feels good. So, so good.

There are a few other blog posts brewing in my brain that I'll try to get to in the next few days. In the meantime, I'm around and kickin'. And feeling much better about it all.

Can't seem to catch up

There is so much to blog about, but I barely have time to breathe these days. I'm exhausted and I'm trying to enjoy the season, which leaves little time to blog about the things I'm doing that are trying to maintain a sense of normalcy this holiday season. With that said, I'll try to get some pictures up of the following things one of these days, but for now, here is a rambling post full of bullet-points:

* We hosted our annual party for some of our good friends last weekend. I made a bunch of appetizers, which meant I was cooking half of Friday and all day Saturday, but they turned out great and it was fun living in my kitchen for awhile. The highlight for me was making mini pumpkin cheesecakes (so yummy!) and Gingerbread Snowflakes from Miss Martha. If I do say so myself, they turned out adorable!

* I've done the vast majority of our Christmas shopping this year online. I've found good deals, lots of free shipping and I haven't had to run around all over the place looking for stuff. With only 2 gifts left to purchase, my holiday shopping is almost complete. Thank God!

* I was in charge of our office holiday party for the second year in a row, after swearing that I wouldn't do it after last year's craziness. Well, now I've officially had it. I'm out for next year. It's frankly not worth the bitching and moaning from folks and the work involved in putting it all together. On the upside, I provided the holiday music and two of my worker bee co-workers who helped put the party together liked it so much that they've asked for a copy of it. :) They said it was a great mix of all those songs you hear out in the malls, but can never remember once you get home. It's such a silly thing to be proud of, but oh well. Ha!

* As of today, I know of 9, count 'em n-i-n-e people who are having babies sometime in 2009. And about half of them are close family and friends. I'm so happy for everyone, but no joke, I'm buying stock in Babies R Us! Oh, and we keep telling my mother-in-law about the babies and she finally replied with "Okay, I don't want to hear anymore about your friends babies." Implying, of course, that she'd like to hear about our babies! Hahahahahaha! Yeah, not for a loooong time, if ever.

* Instead of real babies, hubs and I are starting to consider a baby of the furry variety, namely a puppy. We have a short list of breeds we're considering and will likely head to a dog show after the first of the year to see the breeds in person, talk to the breeders, etc. Once we finally decide on a breed that would be good for us, we'll get more information from AKC breeders and local breed-specific rescue groups. Most of the dogs on our list are also known for being good therapy dogs with proper training and this is something I'm really interested in. Not only would we be giving back to the community, but we'd be ensuring we'd have a well-behaved dog in general. We're not exactly sure of the timeline yet, but 2009 will likely see us adding a furry friend to our home. Very exciting!

* Lastly, I chopped my hair. This was sort of inadvertant as I asked the stylist for a "long bob", but she didn't so much hear the "long" part. I'd been toying with the idea of going short for some time, but I didn't have the guts to go for it. It was much easier for the stylist to accidently goof, at least for me. Super easy to style and such in the morning and it's just fun to have a very different look.

And that's the long, somewhat convoluted version of what's been going on these days. Things with my dad are still sticky, but I'm trying to leave most of the crazy to the lawyer and only get involved when absolutely necessary. So far, so good. And I seem to be having more good days than bad, but I'm not sure how much of that is due to accepting what happened vs. being too busy to really take it all in. Time will tell.

Hope everyone is having a happy holiday season!

MIA

Yup, that's been me. I don't have a great reason, but I'm back with somewhat abbreviated recap. Yay!

Last weekend, I went to the awesome Fondue Party and Charity Event thrown by the OC nesties who are running the LA Marathon with Team in Training (recaps can be found here, here and here). It was a great night; I got to finally meet some of the OC girls, eat a ton of yummy cheese and chocolate and drive down and back with a crazy carload of LA girls. Oh, and I won a one-hour massage GC in the raffle! Score! All in all a great night. But then, the weekend went downhill.

The next morning I woke up feeling severly hungover; not an issue except for the fact that the night before I was DD. I progressively felt worse as the day went on and wound up missing my friend's 30th birthday party that night as I just couldn't get myself off the couch to make an appearance. Boooo! I was sick the rest of the weekend and early into last week. Not fun.

My routine has just been "off" since then and am just now feeling like I've got things back on track. This week it's back to normal. :)

Today I did make it out to a Blog Party bruch organized by the monkey (good times as expected), but had to leave way too early to watch my boyfriend (aka Tom Brady) play in the AFC championship game. They won. It's been a good day ;)
